Great Aunt is an Americana/folk duo from Melbourne, Australia, rambling a musical line between the plaintive and the joyous. Their music is raw and austere, simple and bold; full of stomping feet and clapping hands, chants and harmonies, whispered words and soulful lament. Set somewhere between a gospel church in Louisiana and a dimly-lit speakeasy in Melbourne, listeners will hear tales of joy and grief, whiskey and wine, gratitude and purpose-seeking.
Formed in 2016, the duo is a collaboration between songwriters Megan Bird (mandolin, guitar, vocals) and Chelsea Allen (double bass, vocals, percussion), and draws attitude and inspiration from their diverse musical backgrounds in punk, blues, jazz, and roots music.
Great Aunt have spent the last 18 months touring the east coast of Australia, including festival performances at Groundwater Country Music Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Nimbin Roots and Foggy Mountain Bluegrass Festival, Newport Folk Festival as well as repeat performances and showcases in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, with plenty of regional shows along the way.
Their debut single, ‘Tell Me When It’s Over’ received high-rotation airplay on various community radio stations Australia-wide and was nominated in 3 ‘Best Songs of 2017’ (Last Night in Town, Miss Chatelaine and Almost Famous Radio). A video clip for ‘Tell Me When It’s Over’ was premiered on The Bluegrass Situation (USA), and featured on Foxtel’s Country Music Channel (Sunday Night Alt).
Great Aunt is preparing to release their anticipated debut EP, ‘A Mess That I Left’ - entirely self-produced and recorded – 31 August 2018.
"Great Aunt burst out of the gate with [their] debut single in May - and damn is it great! It's spare and simple but it just demands you listen to it. I can't wait to see what they produce in 2018." - Katie Purvis, Miss Chatelaine, JoyFM
"This duo are destined for big things I tell ya. Such a brilliant sound. They are absolutely killing it this year." - Nathan Seeckts, Last Night in Town, PulseFM
