Breabach (UK) - Wednesday 21st March 2018

Breabach began 2017 in exciting fashion as receivers of the Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Folk Band of the Year’ for the second time and ‘Album of the Year’ for their fifth studio album ‘Astar’. A special Celtic Connections show to celebrate the album was held in February in Glasgow’s City Halls and was received with a sell out crowd and 5 star review in the Scotsman.
The momentum continued with nominations for ‘Best Band’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and for ‘European Album of the Year’ in the Songlines Music Awards. This was underpinned by a packed live performance schedule including tours of the UK, Sweden and Canada and an exciting, energetic festival season across Europe.
2018 will see Breabach back in the studio to record a sixth studio album as well continuing their adventures across the globe with tours of the UK and Australia to kick things off. Delivering an increasingly mature repertoire and live performance whilst continuing to build their reputation at the forefront of the UK’s world and roots music scene, this is a band at the very top of their game and one not to be missed.
“As polished as it was passionate, matching fiery intensity with exquisite finesse, this was a magnificent set.” The Scotsman *****
“Astar sees Breabach in an electrifying new phase – one that illustrates the band’s strength and interest in experimentation. Exhilarating, energetic and accomplished Astar is a rare, beautiful treat.” Songlines ★★★★
“Astar is Scottish for “journey” and this classy travelogue is remarkable for its variety of collaborations” The Guardian ★★★★
“Astar, a dozen tracks that thrillingly place Scottish traditions within a global context. An album with meaning beyond its own music” The National newspaper

Two unusual singer/songwriters will be sharing original compositions at 5 Church Street in Bellingen on Saturday March 24th. Old friends Jhana Allan and Anni M Fables will each be performing solo as well as collaborating for a portion of the night.

Quasi Dada - Friday 7th April 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-21 at 1.41.38 pm.png

Quasi Dada is a name to remember. The self titled EP combines a collection of diverse tracks that will transport you to another realm, making you want to close your eyes and dance like no one is watching. Quasi Dada is a three-piece fusion of Rock, Folk and Experimental music that is both futuristic and historic in its references.

Mark Bergin (vocals, bass and guitar), Peter Clarke (drums, percussion and synths) met on film set and started songwriting and collaborating. Joined soon after by Billie-Jo Porter (vocals, bass and guitar) who was fresh from a tour in North America.

The trio shares a wide range of influences including Brian Eno, Tom Petty, Velvet Underground, James Browne and Nina Simone. The differing musical tastes and backgrounds of each band member has hatched the progressive sound that Quasi Dada embodies.

The heart beat of Quasi Dada is located in Bellotorium Studios, a small cabin in the coastal mountains of Northern, New South Wales. This is where the self titled EP was written, produced and recorded by the band themselves.

Each song is an evolving journey, both relevant and emotional. Tracks from the EP, Don’t be shy, Savannah, and Did’t you Say explore the sensuality of first encounters, lost love reconnecting and trying to salvage a broken relationship. Let History Decide and Satellite focus on moving away from a broken system towards a new ideal and the duality of feeling isolated yet still connected.

Atmospheric, hybirised, melodic, lyric driven, harmonious and passionate. Quasi Dada is creating exciting new worlds of sound for a diverse and playful audience.

Jamie Hutchings performs at No 5 Church Street as part of his national tour in support of his fourth solo album, and first in seven years - Bedsit. Bedsit was self recorded by Hutchings live to a 90’s era 16 track tape machine on the outskirts of Bathurst in early 2016. It features little else but Ja-mie’s voice and guitar, Reuben Wills’ double bass and occasionally Jamie’s younger sister, re-nowned painist Sophie Hutchings. The performance will see Jamie draw deep from what is now a deep body of work, from Bluebottle Kiss, Infinity Broke through to his current solo material. He will be ably assisted by Reuben Wills on double bass.

Jamie Hutchings is a Sydney based singer/songwriter/guitarist and sometime producer. He began his career as the frontman for much loved underground favourites Bluebottle Kiss in the 1990’s through to the noughties. The group released six acclaimed albums and toured many times around Australia as well as North America and the UK where some of their material was also released. Of the band, All Music in the US said “…this is challenging, rugged, dramatic rock with folk tendencies woven intricately into its coarse fabric.” He has released four solo albums, two albums with the percussion heavy quartet Infinity Broke as well as a recent album in collaboration with Peter Fen-ton called The Tall Grass. A frequent live performer, Hutchings’ music has seen him tour through-out Europe numerous times, North America and even China. His production work has involved art-ists such as Peabody, The Maladies and Mark Moldre and he has guested and collaborated with artists such as Paul Dempsey and Peter Garrett. His other interests include literature, surfing and wine. He is quite messy and cooks poorly.

Michael Dunstan - Friday 20th April 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-21 at 2.02.09 pm.png

On the back of a successful headline National Tour playing 18 shows over 5 states, upcoming Western Australian folk artist Michael Dunstan is headed back around the country launching the newly released second EP 'Partly Cloudy'.

Characterised by warm soulful vocals, intricate fingerpicking, and up-beat foot stomping grooves, Michael’s dynamic live soundscape has stopped audiences in their tracks Australia wide in the last 12 months. The debut EP ‘Solace’ quickly gained traction for the young folk musician, collectively accumulating well over half a million streams in the first 10 months since release, along the journey supporting Ziggy Alberts and performing alongside Riley Pearce.

The second installment ‘Partly Cloudy’ delves deeper, more personal and more diverse. The 5 tracks explore strong feelings of disbelief, the fear of the unknown, gratitude, heartache and the inability to comprehend the depth of our surrounds and everything entailed in day to day life.

Hat Fitz & Cara - Friday 25th APril 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-16 at 5.01.27 pm.png

Hat Fitz and Cara can in no way be mistaken for a dainty duo. They are festival favourites throughout Canada, Australia, Europe, and the UK and it has been said they pack more energy into one song than most have in an entire career. A unique combination of hill-style Gospel blues with old timey flavourings and stripped down to just voices, guitar and vintage drums, Hat Fitz & Cara embellish impeccable rootsy originals with soulful vocals reminiscent of a time once forgotten.

Launching their fourth album, 'After The Rain' is a unique vintage sound that these two have created themselves yet it is packed with a modern punch that cannot be denied once seen live.

This was recorded by the Govinda Doyle who was behind the No. 1 Big Jet Plane by Angus & Julia Stone.
Mastered by Graham Durham Exchange Studios who has worked with the likes of Grace Jones, Sea Sick Steve, Groove Armada and many more.

"This album shows this couple at the peak of their creative powers - soaring soul vocals, visceral blues guitar, unexpected quiet, and sudden changes in feel and tempo. A masterful blend of roar and nuance". (ABC RN) **** Rhythms Mag (Aus) **** Get Ready To Rock (UK)

On his own compositions Peter plays a finger-picking style guitar, holding the essence of his voice and songwriting influenced by African, jazz and a sense of Celtic, while Yeshe accentuates the groove on percussion.

Bobby Alu 'Move' Tour - Sunday 29th APril 2018

Screen Shot 2018-03-21 at 2.29.28 pm.png

Byron Bay based 'tropical ambassador', singer, ukulele strummer and drummer Bobby Alu is back with the single ‘Move’, his first release since 2015’s Bay Sessions EP.

Featuring snappy log drum rhythms inspired by a strong family lineage of Polynesian musicians, island-time ukulele and smooth harmonies dressed up in tight equatorial folk stylings, 'Move' is a musical directive.
Having dedicated his world-class percussion skills to touring internationally with Xavier Rudd over the past five years, it was time for Bobby Alu to chart its own dedicated course again. Back in the studio this year with long-time producer, collaborator and touring buddy Paulie Bromley (The Beautiful Girls, george), Alu will follow up the exploratory self-titled debut (triple j Roots ‘n All top 10 album of 2010), the clear stylistic intention of 2013’s Take It Slow, and the cruisey attitude of 2015’s Bay Sessions EP, with his third long-player later in 2018.

To support the release of ‘Move’, Alu and his band head out on a 20-date Australasian tour between Easter and May. As usual, he’ll be observing the ebb and flow of life and locking into his tried and always true grooves, though with the fire that comes from holding 20,000 strong festival crowds captive with your beats, as well as the care that can only come from serenading your nearest and dearest by a coastal camp fire, with an instrument handed down from your mother.
